Google Read and Write Assignment 2
Google Read and Write is an extension for Google Chrome that I believe should be available to students across Canada in order to make information in the classroom more accessible to students who have difficulty reading and understanding text information. There is one particular student in my class who I believe would benefit from having computer access and Google Read and Write for all of his lessons. I will refer to this student as John and describe his situation and how Google Read and Write would be beneficial for him.
John
John is a student in grade 7 who is reading at a grade 2 level. He struggles with both writing and reading and needs a scribe and scaffolding for all his written assignments. He is working at the grade 6 level in math and seems better able to follow along and answer questions when the reading portion of the assignment is reduced or simplified. I believe having full time access to a computer with Google Read and Write would reduce or even eliminate his need for a scribe and some of the assistance he currently needs on his assignments.
Ways Google Read and Write Will Help John in the Classroom
I can make class notes available to John ahead of time and provide headphones so he can listen to the notes more than once and he can define words with read and write, create a vocabulary list with highlighting, use the talk and speech feature to create his own understanding of the notes, and ask questions that can be converted to text.
For research and inquiry projects John can highlight and have Google Read & Write read information on websites out loud, he can also highlight individual words to define them, add new words to his own vocabulary dictionary, open a google doc and talk about what he is learning and have that converted to text to answer assignment questions, or create paragraph and essay responses.
In ELA passages, books, poems and assignments can be made available to John on google docs, or on google slides. John can then use headphones and listen to the audio of the text and then answer assignment questions with the talk to text feature.
